And with that, the book is closed!
Though I may be biased, I think this week’s update is our best execution of the back matter concept yet. Much of the thanks goes to Evin who designed/Photoshopped the hell out of this page. I mean, the closed book just sitting there looks real to you too, right?
But also, the concept of an obituary as back matter content goes WAY back into the ThreeOneFive’s history. In fact, it ties into the very founding of our writing team. Some friends out there I’m sure will remember our first attempt at making a comic, “Obituary.” Basically, it was a superhero book about a guy who is Kryptonite to anyone with powers. The hook was that the main character was an obituary writer and after he killed a famous superhero he would write their obituary, which would then appear at the end of each issue. Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, you’ll probably never see it. Trust me, it’s a long story…
Anyway, the point IS we did it today. We published a fictional obituary about a fictional person, by a fictional person. It’s been a long time coming!
Be here NEXT WEEK when the COMIC RETURNS! That’s right, in just 7 days Pitch Black Day Chapter 4 begins and kicks-off 10 weeks in a row of Danilo Guida goodness! This is it! No more talk. No more games. It’s WAR at 4,000 leagues below!
And, HEY YOU! Yeah, the one who hasn’t RSSed, Liked, or Followed yet. Go on and do it already, won’t you? I’ll be your best friend.
Thanks again for reading, folks…and for so graciously tolerating Evin’s blog, The Sunday Bonus Lunch.
Anyways, till next week!

1- How do we know he’s really dead? :0
2- Shoddy work from the Clipping Service, perhaps they were too grief stricken to be around scissors…
3- Nice touch with the wreath of garlic…
With all the lies floating around I can see how you might think that Van Helsing’s death was faked…
However, I think the internal SISX memo pretty much seals his fate. Spy agencies may routinely lie to the public, but I think it is very rare when they lie to themselves.
Yes but, hypothetically speaking, what if Dracula (or the mysterious enemies from the submarine) already knows about SISX, and have even infiltrated the organization? Even the merest possibility that they theoretically might have been compromised would preclude that they could never be allowed the luxury of fully trusting themselves. This would naturally create the necessity that they would continually lie to themselves, and that no one person in the organization (no matter how powerful or trusted) could ever be allowed to know everything they do, or everyone who they employ.
It’s like Spy 101, counterintelligence and applied theories
You make a very compelling point. You’re probably right, I’m sure for the reasons you enumerated spy agencies lie to themselves all the time.
However, I believe that Van Helsing died on his way to his final speaking engagement. He was determined to get the truth out there and I don’t think that anything short of death could have stopped him.
The real mystery is, as crazyman pointed out, what was in the letter Van Helsing handed off to his assassin.
Good to see Monty Chum alive and still kickin.
I knew somebody out there would recognize old Monty’s byline.
As always, thanks for reading, Jason!
I like the style on this one, it’s like someones personal time worn scrap book.
Yeah, as I said in the blog, Evin really knocked it out of the park with the layout and design this week.
It’s the first time that I feel a back matter update has been even close to as satisfying, visually, as the comic pages.
What’s in the letter? I’m aquiver with curiosity.:D
Well, keep aquivering, crazyman because IF we do reveal the content of Van Helsing’s final letter (or as we like to call it the Ultra-Secret Lost Chapter of Dracula) we’re going to at least make you wait a good long while before we do.
