The Secret Origin of Section X!
Arthur Holmwood and Lucy Westenra finally have their day in the sun! What do I mean? Well, if you are familiar with the veritable plethora of Dracula adaptions, quasi-sequels, and spin-offs one thing that most of them have in common is that they either short-change the characters of Arthur and Lucy or exclude them from the proceedings entirely. Most seem to want to focus on Van Helsing (as we did in the last prose interlude), Mina, or Jonathan Harker, and reduce Lucy to “that girl who got bit that isn’t Mina” and Arthur to “that guy standing around in the background, played by Carey Elwes.”
So, we here at the ThreeOneFive were more than happy to take Arthur and Lucy’s tragic love story and put it front and center in our own little quasi-sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic novel. I mean, all the pieces were there – a man is forced to violently stake his undead fiancé to death? This man is also a British Lord? Add life-changing trauma to his considerable influence in the upper-echelons of power in Britain, and it’s just a leap of logic to find OUR Arthur Holmwood, founder of the Anomalous Phenomena Society – KILLER of MONSTERS!
Also, when a woman is as enchanting and beautiful as Lucy, it is undeniable that her loss would be very traumatic, indeed. Danilo, my friend, you’ve outdone yourself yet again. This week’s AMAZING portrait of Lucy stands beside some of your best work on the entire series! Thank you, as always.
Be here NEXT WEEK for the FINAL FATE of SIR ARTHUR HOLMWOOD! The final installment of this prose interlude is just 7 days away, so make sure to RSS, Like, or Follow.
Oh, and thanks to you guys we broke the 200 barrier at Top Web Comics for the first time. As I type this we are sitting at around 175! Thanks so much! However, voting starts anew today for the month of October, so limber up your CLICKING finger because it’s time to vote, vote vote, once again! And, as always, don’t forget to read the Sunday Bonus Lunch!
Anyways, till next week!
-Matt-
Nice twist. I must confess that, having read “DRACULA” a long time ago I had to be reminded who Arthur Holmwood was.
Wonderful portrait, again!
Have you considered some kind of voting incentive for TWC?
As always, keep em’ coming!!!
Thanks!
You’ve illustrated my point in the blog perfectly. EVERYBODY knows who Van Helsing and Mina Harker are, but mention Arthur and to some extent Lucy, and it’s blank stares all around.
On TWC: We’ve kicked around some ideas for voting incentives, but there is really not much that we don’t share with you guys, either on the main page or in the members’ area.
If anybody has some ideas for incentives that might encourage peeps to Vote for the Daredevils more often, please let us know. We’re all ears!
As a voting incentive how about a deck plan of the Custor drawn in puzzle pieces, to be completed after voting every week (or two) for X number of weeks (however long it takes).
That or a code (1 number or letter at a time) to be enterred into a drawing to win a free print.
Or if that fails, the secret to Dracula’s Mullett.
Nice try, sailor, but the plans for The Custer are CLASSIFIED, for the eyes of the Command Crew only!
A raffle or something for a print is a pretty good idea. We’ll take it to the lab…
BUT, the secret of Dracula’s Mullet will NEVER be revealed!!
I actually would not have known the name Mina Harker (or Arthur Holmwood, admittedly). Lucy, on the other hand, is a name that I recognize, if only because of its prominence in Blue Öyster Cult’s musical adaptation. I’m a bit unusual for having read both The Vampyre and Carmilla but never Dracula.
Edit: Whoa. Your comment system does not play well with italics.
Welcome aboard, Seth!
Maybe I just remember Mina because she was played by Winona Ryder…
Anyway, I think it’s interesting that you’ve never read Dracula before and our comic is your first exposure (other than general pop culture) to the material. If you went back and read it now your perception of all the characters would be colored by our take. Cool!
And, yeah, we’ll look into the italics thing
Thanks for reading!
Whoa! nice interlude-curve ball! I mean that’s one hell of a way to put emotion on a story that’s somewhat detached from the reader. It bears to query, what would the captain think of this? Admittedly I don’t pose many questions to the old man, but I’d like his thoughts on this and the situation in general.
Everybody’s got a sob story, TKG. This Godalming fella ain’t no different.
Now, back to your station. There’s still vamps about the corridors, son!
