Oh noes!
Have I started a blog with that line before? I have an itching suspicion that I have, but in all honesty I am just too lazy to go back and look. There’s a No Prize in it for anyone who wants to confirm or deny.
Regardless, I think that “oh noes” pretty aptly sums up this week’s page. For example, Deveraux is a vampire – let that sink in for a second – Deveraux is a freaking VAMPIRE! And, by all indications, he’s done something HORRIBLE to Doc. The first chapter of Pitch Black Day, as a whole, has been pretty intense, but this page really takes it up a notch, am I right? Now there is no doubt, this is the Deep Dive Daredevils’ DARKEST HOUR!

So, there are two more pages left in PBD chapter one, and as I’ve alluded above, the last page is literally the biggest thing we’ve done to date. Since that last page is still TOP SECRET I can’t risk telling you much about what comes after chapter one. However, I will drop two tantalizing hints:
1. We will not be going directly into PBD chapter two. What’s next is an interlude of sorts…a look into the past, perhaps?
2. This “interlude” will be like nothing we have attempted to date. What you see on the blotter will be something other than a comic page.

Anyhow, did you guys see Doc’s frickin’ GLASSES LASER!? Where does he get those wonderful toys, right? Seriously, all kudos should be forwarded to Danilo, as it was his idea, and man did it turn out great!

Sweet merciful crap! So we have infiltrating shape shifters and deliberate infection. this means the fish-men-vamps were a distraction for the real evil of the attack. Hell I doubt eh Custer has seen such an insidious enemy!

Great page Devils!! So has Deveraux been a vamp this whole time?? I’m gonna have to reread past eps fro clues!!
If this is anything like a typical vampire mythos, I find that unlikely. It’s safe to assume that the Custer has been on extended voyages, during which it would have been noticed if Deveraux were snacking on his shipmates rather than eating with them.
Oh, no! He has been bitten somewhere between page 8 and this one…(and turned really fast, I must admit… but in literature, comics and movies there´s a thing called ellipsis, right?)
If you look closely, on panel 5 you can see the bite marks in Deveraux neck.

Re: Deveraux’s rather quick transformation into a vampire…I believe the term you are referring to is “artistic license.”
Deveraux might have an increased response to vampirism, due to his New Orleans background.

But the word ellipsis does exist in the dictionary.
You’re absolutely right, Danilo.
I always think of an ellipsis in the grammatical sense. You know the handy “…” in dialogue.
But, I did some research and found that ellipsis has a completely different meaning when you use it in the context of storytelling.
Here’s what I found:
“Another way of involving listeners is to use an elliptical storytelling style which leaves something out of the narrative, requiring them to take part in constructing the meaning…”
And, that’s pretty much exactly what we did with Deveraux. He was bitten and turned into a Vampire off-panel. We left it all to the reader to fill in the blanks.
