The deck gun is pointed at the island because THAT’s where somebody left it- if there were a precieved threat, there would be a crew on the gun. It’s placement is artistic license, as it is too close to the conning tower to have much operational space or rearward trajectory. She is somewhere between a Gato and a Tench, with… interesting… modifications to the conn and propulsion units.
… and I realise that there is the desire to show off the knarly eyeball on her bow, but she is STILL too high in the water for a submersible.

Question(s) for the Sub People out there:

The deck gun of the Custer is pointed towards the Island, indicating that the greatest perceived threat (I would assume aside from the volcano) would most likely be coming from the Island itself, even with the perceived friendly natives.

Is this the norm, or would the possibility of attack from the sea seem more likely for a docked sub?

315 was the gun placement intentional, or did Smilton just use his license to create the drawing that way?

Oh and is anyone, aside from the good (if slightly inebriated) Captain, on watch on the ship? I can’t see anyone on the deck.
