You make a very compelling point. You’re probably right, I’m sure for the reasons you enumerated spy agencies lie to themselves all the time.

However, I believe that Van Helsing died on his way to his final speaking engagement. He was determined to get the truth out there and I don’t think that anything short of death could have stopped him.

The real mystery is, as crazyman pointed out, what was in the letter Van Helsing handed off to his assassin.

Yes but, hypothetically speaking, what if Dracula (or the mysterious enemies from the submarine) already knows about SISX, and have even infiltrated the organization? Even the merest possibility that they theoretically might have been compromised would preclude that they could never be allowed the luxury of fully trusting themselves. This would naturally create the necessity that they would continually lie to themselves, and that no one person in the organization (no matter how powerful or trusted) could ever be allowed to know everything they do, or everyone who they employ.

Well, keep aquivering, crazyman because IF we do reveal the content of Van Helsing’s final letter (or as we like to call it the Ultra-Secret Lost Chapter of Dracula) we’re going to at least make you wait a good long while before we do.

Yeah, as I said in the blog, Evin really knocked it out of the park with the layout and design this week.

It’s the first time that I feel a back matter update has been even close to as satisfying, visually, as the comic pages.

With all the lies floating around I can see how you might think that Van Helsing’s death was faked…

However, I think the internal SISX memo pretty much seals his fate. Spy agencies may routinely lie to the public, but I think it is very rare when they lie to themselves.
