When you spend enough time studying the parables Jesus taught in the New Testament, symbolism becomes rather apparent. He now knows where he came from... but he also knows who he is, which is more important. He was respected as a leader from day one, as leadership is a strong part of his gene pool... but he was taught to serve others instead of himself. A good leader sees to his troops, to his mission, to values that allow him to sleep in peace and look at himself in a mirror. A bad leader serves his ego and an unquenchable thirst for power.
He is also a somewhat hesitant leader, one that does not relish the role. This old Sargent knows a few things about that.
He will do fine. He will be honored by a loyal crew, challenged by many new quandaries and lead from the front- maybe not the 'perfect commander', but certainly in the running.
He will need a sage first officer, or better still a crusty NCOIC, one with a sleeve full of TOD stripes and interesting tattoos and scar tissue. A fellow where "Been there, done that- GET OUT OF MY WAY!" sums him up very nicely. Take the skinny kid with freckles and glasses and commission him- as an ensign, he will be a perfect comic foil (think 'Charles Parker' on 'McHale's' Navy').

... just a few thoughts...

It 100% is from Star Trek 4. Just one of the many homages to our favorite stories that have made their way into DDD.

So- it appears the boy now faces life with both eyes open. Behold, the new skipper of the Custer... assuming the Custer can be salvaged. Skipper understood that he is a born leader and groomed him accordingly.

He will do well. There will be replacement crew members, a new configuration or totally new submarine and the adventure will continue. I just hope he doesn't get fused into the boat like his predecessor before consumating his marriage...

I just hate when that happens.
