Honestly, not to burst your bubble, but I think it first happened as a typo. The class of submarine that we based the Custer on is a Gato Class. So, if I recall correctly, we were going to have the sub called "The Gato" to reference its origin, but it ended up "The Gatto" by the slip of a finger. The rest is history. 2. Actually, when we were conceiving this story we set out to try to make "our" Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, except all at once and in a non-linear structure.
