That dimension might have had a perpetual civil war, or the south might have won. The actual answer hasn't yet been in the comic if it is ever something that will get answered. He's not quite 100 years old though... He did fight in the Civil War, but then he got caught up in the interdimensional war with the Giga-Reich...so he's lived out some of his years in different loops, and the loops don't have corresponding timelines, so...
