Custer and the Doc were at almost the same depth, so Doc should be alright. I would not be completely surprised if the Admiral, or someone in command, was not just elaborately faking Doc's death to make it look like the trains cargo and Doc were blown up, instead of stolen. Maybe you are going in another direction, anything is possible... I am still guessing that Doc already had his escape underway (perhaps he was in the process of teleporting elsewhere) and Custer threw a wrench in the works.
